Can You Use Duct Tape on Dryer Vents?
The name “duct tape” might suggest it’s safe to use anywhere — including on your ducts. But that isn’t the case. While duct tape is excellent for many household tasks, it is not appropriate for sealing dryer vents. In fact, using duct tape on dryer vents can create serious fire hazards and safety risks. Fresh Air Duct Cleaning strongly advises against it.
Can You Use Duct Tape on Dryer Vents?
No. Do not use duct tape to seal a hole in your dryer vent, connect it to the wall, or for any other purpose on your dryer vent or air ducts. Duct tape is a common household item, but it poses a serious threat to the safety of your home when used on dryer vents.

The Problems With Duct Tape
The first problem is the adhesive. Dryer vents experience frequent fluctuating temperatures that cause duct tape’s adhesive to dry out over time. Once it dries, the tape begins to fall off — allowing hot air to escape from the duct and creating a safety risk. Worse, dried-out tape can heat up enough to catch fire, essentially turning into tinder inside your ductwork.
Another issue is access. Modern appliances and ducts are embedded in walls, ceilings, and floors, making them hard to reach. Attempting to seal a hole yourself in these concealed areas is difficult and risky — it’s best to have a professional handle any necessary air duct or dryer vent repairs.
The most serious concern involves gas appliances. Gas-powered clothes dryers can produce carbon monoxide — a colorless, odorless, and toxic gas. Your dryer vent carries this gas safely out of your home, but rips, tears, or poorly sealed cracks can allow it to spill back inside. Duct tape is not built to maintain a lasting seal under these conditions, making it a dangerous choice for gas dryer vent connections.
How Do You Seal a Dryer Vent?
Instead of duct tape, use foil tape. Foil tape is a metal-backed tape with far greater durability — it resists heat, resists fire, and is crack-resistant. That crack resistance is especially important for homes with gas appliances, where a reliable seal is critical. Foil tape is widely available at most hardware stores.
